In it, Laraque accusses the Canadiens of a cold and calculated public relations plan that he calls a "manipulation strategy" aimed at making Mailloux the victim in the situation. Mailloux was convicted in Sweden of distributing a photo of a woman he was involved in an intimate situation with without her consent. He was fined and part of that money went to the victim. When he made the charge public, he asked teams not to select him in the upcoming draft as he felt he needed more time to mature. The Montreal Canadiens selected him 31st overall despite that request, promising to work with him to ensure he full understands to consequences of his actions and takes full responsibility for them.
