With the NFL coaching carousel in full bloom, Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo becomes the hottest name.
Teams are noticing his leadership and his defensive prowess, and now the Jacksonville Jaguars jump into the fray.
The Jaguars have requested an interview with Spagnuolo to fill their head coaching vacancy, the team announced, adding him to a list of candidates that already includes Brian Flores (Vikings), Patrick Graham (Raiders), and Aaron Glenn (Lions).
That all came on the heels of an embarrassing 4-13 season for the Jaguars, including firing head coach Doug Pederson two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Spagnuolo is still openly amenable to another head coaching job and apparently already drawing other teams' attention. The Raiders and Jets, per reports, have both made calls to try and schedule an interview with him.
With a reputation for being one of the more consistent defensive units in the NFL, Spagnuolo's legend extends far beyond the field.
His ability to lead players has been talked about, and spending time with Andy Reid in one of the more highly respected organizational cultures in Kansas City only helps his case.
At 65 years young, however, Spagnuolo doesn't quite fit the mold of a younger, offense-oriented head coach in many ways, which can be a factor in teams weighing decisions.
The Kansas City coaching and front-office staff are getting shopped around. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy interviewed for top positions, and so did assistant GM Mike Borgonzi, further showing how the Chiefs affect the landscape of the NFL.
As the offseason begins to take shape, one of the most interesting storylines will be regarding Spagnuolo's future implications aplenty, from a career standpoint to the ability of Kansas City to retain its elite coaching ranks.
