When a report from DFO's Frank Seravalli surfaced on Thursday that New York Rangers backup goaltender Alexandar Georgiev wanted out of New York and had requested a grade, there was some speculation as to whether or not the rumours were true.

On Friday, USA Today's Vince Z. Mercogliano took to Twitter to refute Seravalli's report, indicating that he had spoken to Georgiev's agent Mike Liut and that Liut vehemently denied the rumour.

"It's not true," said Liut on Friday. "There isn't anything to it."

It wouldn't be the first time that a rumour like this surfaced, only to be refuted and then later being revealed as truth (see Sam Bennett in Calgary last season and Patrik Laine in Winnipeg).

While Georgiev saw 30+ starts in 2018-19 and 2019-20, he wound up playing just 19 games for the Rangers in 2020-21 and an increase in opportunity elsewhere would be enticing for the 25-year-old netminder for sure.

In 96 career NHL games, Georgiev owns a 43-38-9 record with a 2.95 GAA and a .912 SV% over that span.

The Russian netminder is entering the final year of his current deal, which carries a $2.425M cap hit. He is set to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer.
