Evander Kane underwent an unexpected surgery and the Edmonton Oilers organization has revealed the recovery timeline for the veteran forward.

Back in September, the Edmonton Oilers announced that Evander Kane would be forced to miss a significant portion of the NHL season due to multiple injuries.

He notably had to undergo abdominal surgery, and the Oilers placed him on the Long-Term Injury Reserve during the training camp.

With General Manager Stan Bowman making major additions to the lineup with Viktor Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner, he used the money freed up by placing Kane on the LTIR, leaving many fans believing the controversial forward wouldn't return to action before the playoffs, where teams can go over the cap limit.

The Oilers organization announced a massive update regarding Kane's status, that will force him to miss even more time, suggesting a return in the regular season could be even more unlikely to happen.

In breaking news, the team revealed that Kane underwent a knee surgery yesterday, that will add four to eight weeks to his rehabilitation period.

Here's the official statement posted by the organization about Kane's surgery:

"Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane underwent successful knee surgery on Thursday in Edmonton. It is expected that he will require four to eight weeks of recovery time.

While this procedure is unrelated to his abdominal surgery in September, it will require him to pause his current rehabilitation schedule to recover from Thursday's operation.

His rehabilitation will continue to take place in Edmonton under the supervision of the club's medical staff."

Despite Kane's absence, the Edmonton Oilers are performing well on the ice this year, with a 25-13-3 record and standing in second place in the Pacific Division, only six points behind the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

However, they could've used his physical implication last night, where they lost 5-3 in an action-packed game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
