The hockey world has known plenty of tragedy in recent times, and now the Flames have announced the heartbreaking passing of a former Head Coach.

The Calgary Flames have won just one Stanley Cup in the history of the organization, and now, they've unfortunately announced the tragic passing of a key member of that team.

Al MacNeil was the Assistant General Manager during the Flames 1989 Stanley Cup victory, and while he couldn't find that success as a Head Coach with the team, he was a long-time executive and one of the most respected members of the Calgary Flames organization.

Not only that, MacNeil also had some fantastic success as a coach of the Montreal Canadiens, as he spent just one season as Head Coach in Montreal, leading them to the Stanley Cup in 1971.

At 89-years of age, MacNeil lived a long, happy and successful life both in hockey and outside of it, as he has a beautiful family that was by his side during his final moments.

While MacNeil may not be one of the biggest names in hockey history, he is certainly incredibly respected throughout the league, as he played a huge role in any success the Flames have had over the past 30 years, with several Flames reporters shouting out the immense impact he had in Calgary.

Al MacNeil embodied nothing but class and integrity.

There was nothing cooler than saying hi to Chopper during a practice or morning skate. You always knew you were around hockey royalty.

What an amazing life and legacy. Rest easy.

At this time we send our condolences to MacNeil's family, friends, colleagues, former players and the entire hockey community in Calgary, who lost a true legend of the game today.
