NHL commissioner Gary Bettman recently made some comments surrounding his retirement, and it appears he may not be close to calling it quits after all.

Gary Bettman has been the commissioner of the NHL for more than 20 years. He has guided the league through massive expansion and attempts to grow the fan base during his reign, though his time in charge hasn't been without controversy, including three lockouts.

Turning 73 this summer, Gary Bettman is the subject of queries as to when he might be retiring in the near future. Talking on the 'What Chaos!' show before the Winter Classic, he made it known that he is not done yet.

«I love what I do, I'm energized by it. The league has been growing, I've got great support of ownership. Hockey's in a good place and I'm thrilled to be a part of it,» Bettman said on the What Chaos! Show.

«If I didn't have the energy and I didn't love what I do and get thrilled every day to go to work, then I'd have to think about slowing down,» Bettman added.

While showing no signs of slowing down, even Bettman has to acknowledge the fact that he is not getting any younger.

«Father time always wins and I'll have to deal with that. But at least for the foreseeable future, I like where I am,» he said.

Though there has been some criticism regarding his style and the lockouts, it would be unfair to fault Bettman for his work in developing the NHL.

The league has expanded franchises under his watch, has rising revenues, and more exposure, especially via NBC Sports.

It's no surprise that Bettman is the longest-serving active commissioner in professional sports, a distinction he's held since Bud Selig retired from Major League Baseball in 2015.

If Bettman's energy holds up as he says, his tenure, already two decades long, could last several more years.
