The Edmonton Oilers have been a very active team this offseason, overhauling their blue line by acquiring veteran Duncan Keith, trading Ethan Bear, re-signing Tyson Barrie, inking UFA Cody Ceci and adding some nice complimentary pieces up front in Zach Hyman and Warren Foegele.

The Oilers are currently about $1.5M over the salary cap, but with defenseman Oskar Klefbom and his $4.167M likely to spend the season on LTIR, the Oilers appear to be in good shape with a full compliment of players and only youngster Kailer Yamamoto in need of a new deal for this season.

With the Oilers positioned nicely for next next few years, they do have at least one major piece coming due for a new contract at the conclusion of the upcoming season with defenseman Darnell Nurse set to become a UFA next summer.

On a recent edition of the 31 Thoughts Podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman had indicated that the two sides were grinding away trying to strike a long-term, huge money deal. According to Friedman, Nurse is in line to earn Dougie Hamilton, Seth Jones money, at around $9M over 8 seasons.

Certainly a rich deal for the 26-year-old, who is coming off of the best statistical season of his career, posting 36 points in 56 games for the Oilers in 2020-21. 16 of those points happened to be goals, besting his previous career-high of 10 goals back in 2018-19.

The defensemen are continuing to cash in with lofty new deals this year. There certainly appears to be a precedent set for the type of term and money it takes to lock guys up through - and even after - their prime years.
