Anaheim Ducks' Drew Helleson delivered a punishing knee hit on Calgary Flames' Connor Zary last night, and now he has just received his suspension fate.

Anaheim Ducks defenceman Drew Helleson will not receive any additional discipline for his knee-on-knee hit on Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary, according to Frank Seravalli of 'Daily Faceoff'.

The play happened during the second period of last night's Flames-Ducks game. Connor Zary was attempting to cut to the middle as he skated into the Ducks' zone before running knee-on-knee with Drew Helleson.

The hit appeared to leave the young Flames forward badly hurt. Helleson was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for the hit.

The hit sent shockwaves through Flames Nation, where fans were crying out for a suspension due to the severity of the injury.

Zary did not return to the game, and though his status has yet to be updated, he looked to be in so much pain on the ice that he's likely to be out for some time.

A long-term absence for Zary would be a big blow to the Flames, who sit tied on points with the Vancouver Canucks for the last wild-card playoff spot in the West after last night's overtime victory.

The biggest key to the Flames' success this season has been Zary. His 10 goals are third on the team, and his 22 points tie him with MacKenzie Weegar for third place in overall scoring.

On top of his offensive impact, Zary's strong defensive play has cemented his position as a reliable two-way forward.

He has developed steadily throughout the season and has recently become more comfortable playing at center, a development of great importance for a thin-at-center Flames team.
