There was a blown call in yesterday's Sabres-Avalanche game, and many felt it was one of the worst of the season, leading one corporation to take a stand.

Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar was fuming on Thursday night, well after his team emerged with the overtime victory. Infuriated over what he felt was a blown no-call in the third period where starting goalie Scott Wedgewood left with an injury.

The incident occurred when Sabres forward Zach Benson, checked by Avalanche center Parker Kelly, ran into Scott Wedgewood's right leg. Wedgewood crashed to the ice in obvious pain, but play continued.

Zach Benson regained the puck and scored while Wedgewood lay helpless in the crease. The goal was allowed to stand despite the injury to Wedgewood.

Jared Bednar challenged the goal for goaltender interference, but it stood after review. A dazed Wedgewood was taken off the ice a short while later and replaced by Mackenzie Blackwood.

After the game, Bednar said Wedgewood will be further evaluated and may be out for some time.

«If he's hurt and he's not getting up, and they can evaluate that, and they're standing right there looking at it, the whistle should go,» Bednar said after the Avalanche rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat the Sabres 6-5 in overtime. «It's just that simple. For them to just let it go and then allow the goal is insanity to me.»

The controversy appeared to ignite the Avalanche. Jonathan Drouin pulled the game even late in regulation, and Devon Toews won it only 48 seconds into overtime.

Even with the victory, Bednar was visibly irate and said he expects to speak to the league regarding an incident.

Adding to the theatrics, Lasik, a laser eye surgery multi-billion dollar corporation, posted on X by offering free laser eye surgeries to NHL referees to support the integrity of the game.

The facetious offer has made fans wonder if better eyesight would cut down on the number of errors being made in calling games.

The bottom line for Bednar is how to manage his lineup without Wedgewood and move forward this season. Whether or not Lasik's offer is taken seriously, the incident puts a focus on ongoing concerns about NHL officiating.
