According to Nick Kypreos, the New Jersey Devils have signed defenceman Dougie Hamilton to a seven-year deal worth north of $60 million.

Update: this signing is now official. Seven years, $63 million ($9 million AAV)

Hamilton, 28, was the most coveted free agent heading into this offseason. In 55 games this past season with the Carolina Hurricanes he registered 10 goals and 42 points. The season prior, he was having a Norris Trophy like year with 40 points in 47 games before suffering a season ending injury. This is a huge signing for the Devils who have struggled for a long period of time and can hopefully turn things around with this.

Not bringing back Hamilton will be a huge loss for the Hurricanes who had arguably the best blueline in the entire NHL last season. While they will still be a good team in 2021-22, this will hurt them and could see them regress in league standings. For Hamilton, he will receive a huge raise on his average annual value, as last season his cap hit was just $5.75 million.
