Tony DeAngelo, who was forced to sign in the KHL this season after no NHL team would take him, has experienced his first hiccup in the league after being benched

After signing a one-year deal in the KHL for the 2024-25 season, things seemed to be going very well for former NHLer Tony DeAngelo.

Tony DeAngelo himself recently said he knows his polarizing NHL career may be over , but he was ripping it up with SKA St. Petersburg, scoring 6 goals and 33 points in 32 games so far.

But his last game with SKA brought about his first snag in the league. Coach Roman Rotenberg benched DeAngelo for the entire third period of the team's last game, insisting his team has no star players.

" In our team, everyone is equal, we always work as a team. Personal statistics are part of teamwork. Each person is equal, we do not have stars in the team, our team is a star."

Rotenberg would only say that DeAngelo knows why he was benched, and added that he may find himself as a healthy scratch if he's not more careful.

"We have Pasha Akolzin doing a crazy amount of work for the team, and that's despite the fact that he's also scoring now. These are the kind of players we need to win. Let's see what will happen with the lineup for the next match."

DeAngelo's NHL tenure was mired in controversy, and was heavily scrutinized following an incident with New York Rangers teammate Alexander Georgiev.

The 29-year-old called it ridiculous when Philadelphia Flyers head coach Jon Tortorella made him a healthy scratch on a few occasions during the 2022-23 NHL season.
