Matthew Knies is in the midst of a potentially career best year, and now the 23-year old has opened up on a new contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have drafted well in recent years, but they've not found anyone better in the previous four years than Matthew Knies, who was a second-round pick back in the 2021 NHL Draft.

In his first full career year a season ago, Knies tallied 35 points in 80 games played, but in 2024/25 he's already shown clear improvement, posting 11 goals and 19 points in just 35 games played.

The timing of that works out well for the 23-year old, who is an RFA at the end of this current season, and with the team potentially set to lose both Mitch Marner and John Tavares, they appear ready to lock up their young forward for years to come.

Now, the talented young forward has opened up on a potential extension, noting in an interview with The Athletic that he's solely focused on this season and isn't thinking too far into the future at this point.

«I don't focus on that at all. It didn't affect me when I was in college and deciding. I'm just focused on what I can do to become a better player. I don't care about points or fancy plays.

I just want to help this team win at all costs. That's the value I can bring to the team. There are still improvements I can make, but there's a lot of hockey ahead of me.»

With great chemistry alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, it's clear that Knies could be a key piece of the Maple Leafs future, and if developed well, he could eventually become an All-Star in the NHL.

There may not be many signs of a deal coming imminently, but it's clear that there's interest on both sides in getting a deal done, so don't be too shocked to see an extension come at some point in 2024/25.
