The Utah Hockey Club claimed Dakota Mermis on waivers earlier this season, and now, they've lost him to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team that they took him from.

Back in early December, the Toronto Maple Leafs waived veteran Dakota Mermis, who was quickly claimed by the Utah Hockey Club given the injuries that they had sustained on their blue line.

Now however, the team have placed him back on waivers with the hopes they could re-assign him to the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL, but after losing him, it appears that Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs have claimed him back, assigning him to the Toronto Marlies immediately.

This was certainly an interesting move for Toronto, as they don't have space for him at the NHL level, and with their blue line depth they definitely won't have space for him unless they lose a catastrophic amount of defenseman throughout the year due to injury.

However, the 30-year old does provide solid organizational depth, as he started with the team earlier in the year, but after the return of Jani Hakanpaa, they waived him in hopes that he could head to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

At 30-years of age, Mermis has appeared in just 75 games in the NHL thus far, with only one game played during his stint in Salt Lake City, with just four goals and 12 total points accumulated throughout that time.

It's unclear at this point why Toronto so desperately wanted Mermis back, as he is unlikely to play a key role for them moving forward, but given that he's solid, cheap depth for the organization, they believe that bringing him back on waivers was the right move to make.
