Igor Shesterkin will be on Injured Reserve (IR), with goaltender Louis Domingue called up from the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack.
The news was first reported by Mollie Walker of the New York Post, and confirmed by Arthur Staple of The Athletic.
It's unclear how long Shesterkin will be out for, but he is not being put on Long-Term Injury Reserve, which would imply whatever the issue is to not be a serious issue that may derail his season.
What happened isn't known, although one potential reason could come from yesterday's game against the Florida Panthers in which Panthers forward Sam Bennett was knocked into Shesterkin by Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren.
Shesterkin got up quickly after being knocked down on this play, but if this caused it, he may have some lingering pain.
Earlier in the day, Hartford had announced they had signed goaltender Conor McCollum to a Professional Tryout Agreement (PTO), sparking some speculation over whether something was happening in the Rangers pipeline, and if it involved the team's two main goalies in Shesterkin or Jonathan Quick.
Shesterkin has an 11-15-1 record this season for the New York Rangers, with a 3.10GAA and a .906sv% in 27 games played.
The Rangers have dealt with constant struggles this season, currently finding themselves in last place in the Metropolitan Division with 33 points and a 16-19-1 record, having lost four straight games.
New York is just a point back of the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings for last place in the Eastern Conference standings, a season after being the best regular season team in the NHL, winning the Presidents Trophy with 114 points.
The Rangers have already begun moving out pieces, sending defenseman Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks and Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken.
Shesterkin, a Vezina Trophy winner for the Rangers in 2022, will be a major loss for New York, but will be offloaded by Quick, who has been strong for the team this season, still a solid netminder at 38 with a 2.69GAA and a .907sv% for the club.
The loss of Shesterkin, a consistent bright spot the past few years for the Rangers, is a massive blow to a team already facing a nightmare of a season rapidly falling from first to worst.
