Toronto Maple Leafs fans worried about missing out on a golden opportunity for an upcoming Stanley Cup just received growing concerns after Brendan Shanahan avoided detailing Mitch Marner's future with the team.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have already overcome several obstacles this season, now still clinging onto a top-10 spot in the league shortly after the return of their recently injured captain.

While all signs point to them making another playoff appearance, fans are worried they may miss their chance to see Toronto break their decades-long Stanley Cup drought.

However, Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan gave fans another reason to keep their concerns, after a clear non-answer about the future Mitch Marner has with the team.

On a recent edition of Domino's That's Hockey on TSN, host Gino Reda asked whether team leadership is planning ahead for a possible extension, or if they are waiting to see how the season plays out.

Instead of giving a direct answer, he stated that he was not at liberty to share Toronto's plans before shifting focus to personal takes on Marner's season so far.

"I've learned you don't comment on any of that type of stuff other than to just say he's playing great hockey. He's been a great player for us for a long time. Any time you've got a guy that is that creative offensively, and also not just one of your team's best defensive players, but one of the league's best defensive players; not surprised how he's playing and we're just happy with the way he's playing and I'll leave it at that."

While Shanahan is likely just covering his bases, his lack of assurance has undoubtedly caused Toronto hopefuls more concern.

Marner has been on a tear this season, currently at his best career production rate if extended for a full season, scoring a point almost every fifteen minutes of ice time- a rate undoubtedly worthy of a hefty contract extension.

Hopefully, Shanahan's silence is more a choice of keeping his cards close to his chest and less an indication of their intention to part ways.
