Washington Capitals veteran forward Tom Wilson rushed off the ice tonight after he was struck in the face with a puck.

The veteran forward was working his way to the front of the net as he battled Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj for positioning when the puck came to him.

Unfortunately, the point shot came up high, striking Wilson right in the face.

He immediately dropped his stick and clutched the left side of his head with his gloved hand.

He was then seen racing towards the Capitals locker room, leaking blood.

These kinds of injuries are obviously very scary and potentially rather serious.

The major concern would be with Wilson's eye. If he was struck there it could affect his vision for the rest of his life.

Hopefully, that is not the case this time, but we will have to wait to know for sure.

Be sure to stay tuned for updates as we get them from the Capitals.

Update

Wilson has since returned to the Capitals bench. He came back just as the Canadiens made it 2-0.

It appears as though he will be a full participant for the rest of the game, so the worst-case scenario was certainly avoided.

We will likely hear more about the incident after the game concludes, but it seems likely that he just got a nasty cut that needed stitches and it wasn't anything more serious than that.

Hopefully, Wilson will be able to contribute on the scoresheet now as his team attempts a comeback in Montreal.
