Stars re-sign defenceman following one-year hiatus from team

The Dallas Stars announced on Friday afternoon that they have re-signed defenceman Julius Honka to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700,000. Honka became a restricted free agent following the 2018-19 season, but held out and decided to not sign with the Stars and played in Finland for the 2019-20 season.

Honka, 24, was drafted in the first round, 14th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2014 NHL entry draft. In 87 career games, he's put up 13 points (2 G, 11 A), 28 penalty minutes, and is a -7. Since joining the Stars organization, Honka has spent the majority of time with their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars. In 201 games, he has 108 points (26 G, 82 A), 158 penalty minutes, and is a -17.

He spent the 2019-20 season with JYP in Liiga, Finland's top hockey league. In 46 games, he had 15 points (4 G, 11 A), 16 penalty minutes, and was a +9.

Internationally, Honka has represented Finland on multiple occasions, most recently at the 2018 IIHF World Hockey Championships. In 8 games he had 1 point (1 A), 0 penalty minutes, and was a +2 as the Finns placed fifth following a loss to Switzerland in the quarter-final. Honka also was apart of Finland's gold medal winning team at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, and he won bronze at the 2013 IIHF World U-18 Hockey Championships.
