Gino Odjick once again battling rare form of heart disease
The man known as 'The Maniwaki Mauler' is once again battling for his life. Gino Odjick, who played more than 600 games in the NHL serving as an enforcer, has told a french language newspaper that his heart ailment that had doctors telling him he had just a year to live at best has returned.
Odjick said his doctors determined about a month ago that he was once again dealing with amyloidosis, a rare condition that produces protein deposits in the heart. He battled the same disease in 2014, leaving his heart with just 25 percent of it's usual power.
"It came back about a month ago,” said Odjick
“They (his doctors) found it early, so I am very confident that I will be able to get rid of it. It was a shock, but what can you do? … There were several treatment options, but I asked to follow the same one I had in Ottawa as it had worked. I'm on chemo for the next six months.”
Odjick began his NHL career with the Vancouver Canucks, playing there for eight years before moving on to the New York Islanders. After that, he also played with the Philadelphia Flyers and the Montreal Canadiens before ending his NHL career in 2002.
Despite being given just months to live in 2014, Odjick turned to an experimental new treatment for his illness. The experimental treatment appeared to have worked and it looks like he will be using it again with this new bout of the illness.
