“Yes, I'm ready to share (the net). This year, I expect it will be a strange season. There will probably be several games in a few days, there will be a condensed schedule,” Fleury told journalist Jean-Francois Chaumont, as translated by theScore. “I think not all teams will have the choice to use their two goaltenders. For this season, it'll be a good thing to count on two competitive goalies. It'll give our team a good chance.
Fleury, 35, struggled throughout the 2019-20 season with a 2.77 goals against average (GAA) and a .905 save percentage (SV%). His struggles were a big reason the Knights went out and acquired Robin Lehner from the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline.
Come the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the net belonged to Lehner, who clearly impressed the organization and just recently signed a five-year deal paying him $5 million per season. That led to much trade speculation regarding Fleury, however general manager Brad McCrimmon has recently stated that they will keep both goaltenders for the upcoming season.
Being relegated to the backup role is nothing new to Fleury, who saw Matt Murray cut into his playing time with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Like now, Fleury handled it with complete class, never once complaining and giving it his all each time he was given a start. Of course, given his very decorated resume, it is still possible he is able to outplay Lehner and take the net back. It will be something to keep an eye on in the 2020-21 season.
