Boston Bruins showing interest in Alzner
It is sure looking like the Bruins are going to be younger on the back-end then they have been in the past, and it is uncertain who is all going to be playing at the top level when the regular season comes around. Longtime Bruin Zdeno Chara may not even be returning to the team, and they already lost Torey Krug to the St. Louis Blues in free agency.
The only defenseman above 26 years old currently on the roster is Kevan Miller, but they do have some talent in Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo, and Matt Grzelcyk. The Bruins have definitely explored lots of options to keep their d-core top notch, including looking into trading for Coyotes' Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
Another possibility to bring in some more veteran presence is to sign Karl Alzner. Although he has played just 13 games over the past 2 seasons while being stuck in the minors with a bad contract. He was finally bought out of his five-year $23 million contract at the end of last season. He still has the talent to be a cheap insurance policy as a left handed defenseman if the Bruins' young d-men are not ready to make the jump to the NHL.
Alzner stands at 6 foot 2 and weighs 210 pounds, but he has never been a premier offensive defenseman, he was a top 4 d-man back in 2017. Alzner definitely could bounce back with a team like the Boston Bruins, who have a loaded roster with tons of talent. This definitely should be a move that the Bruins look into.
