According to a report, the New York Rangers have extended a qualifying offer to restricted free agent Tony DeAngelo, but the person making the report believes he's likely going to arbitration.

"The [Rangers] have extended defenseman Anthony DeAngelo a qualifying offer. 53 points last season and a +12. I would think this one might be heading to arbitration," said Colby Cohen of NBC Sports and ESPN. "It's going to take 5+ million a year to get this done before arbitration."

DeAngelo, 24, is coming off a contract that carried a cap hit of $925,000, so $5 million plus is a massive raise. According to Capfriendly, the Blueshirts currently have over $20 million in cap space, but that's because there are several other RFAs and unrestricted free agents that need to be signed to new contracts for the 2020-21 season. That includes goaltender Alexander Georgiev, Ryan Strome, Brendan Lemieux, and Jesper Fast, among others.

Cohen did not say how much money or term the Rangers are offering DeAngelo, but it's likely the team is looking at holding on to him as long as possible after a breakout season in 2019-20. DeAngelo signed a one-year deal as an RFA before the beginning of last season and had an excellent year so it's doubtful he's willing to accept anything similar this time around. Arbitration may be the last thing the Rangers want as it usually ends up in the player's favour.
