San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson sounds quite optimistic for the upcoming season, saying to reporters Friday that defenceman Erik Karlsson is fully healthy for the first time since joining the organization in September of 2018.

Since joining the Sharks, Karlsson has failed to be the dominant defenceman he was for so many years with the Ottawa Senators. Of course, a big part of that is injuries, as he has played in just 109 games over his two seasons. The two-time Norris Trophy winner struggled like the rest of his teammates this past season, posting six goals and 40 points in 56 games, along with a cringe worthy plus/minus of -15. While the point totals don't seem bad, it is important to note that just a few seasons ago, this was a player who was consistently posting 70+ point seasons, including a career high 82 during the 2015-16 campaign.

If what Wilson says is accurate, this is huge news for the Sharks, who had a horrible season, failing to qualify for the 2020 playoffs despite the league's decision to include 24 teams rather than the standard 16. Given their talent level, it wouldn't be surprising to see them turn things around this upcoming season, but Karlsson, who still has seven seasons remaining on a deal paying him $11.5 million per season, will be a key part of that.
