It's been a strange year when it comes to prospect Matvei Michkov. The talented Russian would likely be the consensus number two pick at the upcoming 2023 NHL Draft (maybe even number one), but it seems teams have had trouble meeting with and having a conversation with him. That's reportedly about to change though.

2023 NHL Draft

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, multiple teams have scheduled a meeting with Michkov at the upcoming draft with starts June 28th.
"Suffice to say, they are looking at getting to know him a little better. No elite NHL draft prospect has had less live viewings/interactions with NHL GMs/executive/head scouts in his draft year than Michkov."

The four teams believed to be interested in meeting with Michkov are the San Jose Sharks (4th pick), the Montreal Canadiens (5th pick), the Philadelphia Flyers (7th pick) and the Washington Capitals (8th pick).

Being Elusive

There are a few theories on why Michkov has been so difficult to meet with. The first is that he signed in the KHL until the end of 2026, and the league is doing everything it can to keep it's homegrown talent in Russia. Secondly, Michkov's attitude seems to be a major question. Even those that have gone to Russia to meet with him reported difficulty in doing so as he seemed uninterested. Third is that he's intentionally trying to get himself picked lower at the draft to be available for a certain team he wants to play for. The Capitals would make a lot of sense with Russian phenom Alex Ovechkin in the fold.
