Veteran NHL defenseman Mark Giordano is reportedly looking to sign with a contender this season, listing several teams including the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers as possible landing spots.

NHL insider Chris Johnston made an interesting report today, revealing that Mark Giordano is still hoping to play this season. More specifically, he wants to play for a team where he would have a chance to win a Stanley Cup, even if he is playing in a limited role. Specifically, Johnston mentioned the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, and Carolina Hurricanes as teams that Giordano would want to suit up for.

This is not the first time Giordano has been linked to the Oilers. In fact, NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed that he and the Oilers had been discussing a possible contract last month.

Clearly, nothing came from those negotiations, but as the Oilers remain linked to the 41-year-old, they very well may be the front runner to land him. Unfortunately though, his age is working against him. He was already the oldest player in the league last year, and even then he could not play a full 82-game season. Giordano got into just 46 games with the Maple Leafs last season, recording 3 goals and 6 assists. That being said, he has had a very long and very good career to this point, so maybe someone will give him a chance.

"As a Norris Trophy winner, Giordano has earned all the laurels that will come his way when he does officially retire. But few NHLers get to author the conclusion of their career, and Giordano is in that large group of veterans. If the end really did come last season, he's got a ton to be proud of - including 1,148 regular-season games and leading the Calgary Flames and Seattle Kraken as their captain - and he can go out gracefully."

While it appears as though the Maple Leafs are not interested, they could have used him last night as the team dropped their season opener to the Montreal Canadiens 1-0. Hopefully, we have not seen the last of Mark Giordano in the NHL. If we have though, it was a heck of a career despite the fact that he never won a Stanley Cup.
