The Anaheim Ducks have come to terms with UFA forward Ryan Getzlaf that will keep the 36-year-old with the Ducks through the 2021-22 season.

There was plenty of speculation leading up to free agency that the Ducks captain would hit the market in an attempt to find a new home for next season after failing to successfully negotiating a contract extension with the team that drafted him 19th-overall in the 1st round back in 2003.

Getzlaf may be in the midst of a rapid decline, but he does still add plenty of intangibles, including leadership to a young Ducks team who is still several years away from contending.

According to Anaheim Ducks Executive VP and General Manager Bob Murray, it was never a question of whether the Ducks wanted Getlzaf to remain in Anaheim, but more of a question of what Getzlaf wanted for his career. Ultimately, he chose to stay.

"It was always our intention to sign Ryan, and we are thrilled he chose to stay," said Murray. "His loyalty to this franchise is unique in pro sports, and it is our hope he remains a Duck for his entire career."

The salary is believed to be in the $4.5M range. The Montreal Canadiens were believed to have been another team who was interested in signing Getzlaf.
