Tony DeAngelo getting another chance in the NHL
Despite the New York Rangers deciding to cut ties with defenceman Tony DeAngelo after an incident involving a teammate, another NHL team is giving him a chance. According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, DeAngelo will be signing a one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes.
"Hearing Canes are closing in on an agreement with UFA D Tony DeAngelo," said Seravalli. "Not done yet. But expecting a 1-year deal. There was lots of interest and the opportunity to play for Rod Brind'Amour was appealing."
As for the incident with a teammate, it all started with a miscommunication between DeAngelo and Rangers goaltender Alex Georgiev during a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins back in January. 10 seconds before the game-winning overtime goal by the Penguins, Georgiev and DeAngelo have a mixup behind the net. Sidney Crosby gets in between them, and the Rangers players who are already on the ice for a while and noticeably exhausted can't get off. Crosby scores, and the Penguins win. The teams head to the back. Georgiev is sitting, disappointed, and DeAngelo walks by him and makes a sarcastic crack to him. It has been reported that Georgiev clocked him. They go at it, and their teammates break it up. Later that night, the Rangers call DeAngelo's and his agent and they say, 'That's the last straw. You're going on waivers tomorrow.'
The Rangers bought out DeAngelo just this week. He had one-year remaining on his contract. If he can keep his nose clean with the Hurricanes, it may be a great opportunity for him to get his career back on track. He can be a very effective offensive defenceman when he's on top of his game.
