Several months after announcing his retirement from hockey, former Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu has been hired as an assistant coach for Finland's U20 team. Koivu will be in charge of special teams (powerplay/penalty kill), and will be behind the bench for Finland at the 2022 World Junior Hockey Championships in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta this coming December.

Koivu, 38, spent parts of 16 seasons with Minnesota and Columbus. In 1,035 regular season games, he tallied 711 points (206 G, 505 A), 594 penalty minutes, and was a +68. The Turku, Finland native played in 59 career playoff games where he had 28 points (11 G, 17 A).

Internationally, Koivu had an illustrious career for Finland, one that will see him be inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame at some point. He's won 11 medals for his country including three gold (U18, World Championship, Olympics), four silver (World Junior, World Championship x2, Olympics), and five bronze (U18, World Juniors, World Championship x2, Olympics).

Best of luck to Mikko in his new role with the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation.
