It has been a difficult season for Joel Farabee of the Philadelphia Flyers, who is not living up to his massive six-year $30 million deal.

Farabee, a former top-15 pick in the 2018 NHL draft has had difficulty producing this season, despite a 50-point breakout campaign last year, and while he is clearly trying, it just isn't working out.

Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella made the difficult decision today to scratch Farabee, but made sure to say that it was not punitive, just necessary due to the on-ice results.

He commented on the decision today:

"Up until probably a couple of weeks ago, I liked his game.

The production wasn't there, but he was involved. And we break tapes down, and we have all sorts of information after games, and he's involved in a lot of the opportunities

I think he cares. He fights the other night. It's hard for me to take him out. He fights for his team.

I think he's fighting just to try to get some juice within us. It's not easy taking him out.

Sometimes you take out players for punitive stuff, and sometimes you take players out just let him get away from a bit.

So this isn't punitive. I need to get him playing better. Maybe he watches, and I'm not sure where it goes.»

This production, mixed with the Flyers being on the outside looking in as far as making the playoffs, has made the winger a possible trade target for many teams.

Top NHL insider Frank Seravalli has placed Farabee sixth on his list of trade candidates ahead of the deadline:

Few players on the Trade Targets board need a change of scenery more than Farabee.

On pace for just 12 goals and 28 points, this is the worst season of Farabee's six-year NHL career and John Tortorella doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Yet just last year, Farabee put up 22 goals and 50 points - leaving many to wonder whether he's still just scratching the surface.

Farabee has a lot of potential, but a change of scenery is desperately needed. The Flyers chose to commit $30 million to him in 2021, but not all marriages last forever.
