A former first-round pick who made the rookie all-star team a few years ago was officially placed on waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Following a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks last night, the Carolina Hurricanes have completed a roster move on Saturday afternoon.

Developing in the NHL is not easy for young players. We often see prospects with a lot of potential struggle at some point in their careers, and some of them can't bounce back.

Ty Smith, drafted 17th overall in 2018 by the New Jersey Devils made the rookie all-star team in his first NHL season, but is now having a tough time keeping a spot in the NHL.

This season, the 24-year-old defenseman has been making a lot of back-and-forth between the NHL and the AHL, but spent the last two weeks in the NHL.

In breaking news, the Canes have decided to place him on the NHL waiver wire:

Ty Smith impressed rookie season in the NHL during the 2020-2021 campaign with the New Jersey Devils, tallying 23 points, including two goals and 21 assists in 48 games.

He joined the Carolina Hurricanes in the trade between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Canes involving Jake Guentzel and signed a one-year deal valued at $775k with the organization this summer

In 13 games with the Wolves in the AHL this season, he scored three goals and seven assists, while adding two points, including one goal, in eight games with the Hurricanes,

NHL teams looking for a young defenseman with offensive potential will certainly be interested in claiming him, especially with his cheap contract.

We will know his fate in 24 hours when the daily update from the NHL waiver wire comes out.

Meanwhile, the Canes are preparing to face the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow, hoping to get two points to close the gap between them and the Washington Capitals at the first spot in the Metropolitan Division.
