Trade rumors involving J.T. Miller used to be a staple in the hockey landscape. When the star center for the Vancouver Canucks signed his long-term extension and his no-move clause came into effect before last season, it appeared those rampant speculations finally had been quashed.
But here we are once more. Recent reports have J.T. Miller back in the trade rumor mill, with the New York Rangers reportedly calling the Canucks about him in November.
Rumors of tension between Miller and Elias Pettersson have added to the speculation, Darren Dreger reported.
Can Miller and Elias Pettersson coexist on the same team? That question has been gaining traction among fans and media alike.
Paul Bissonnette, who has strong connections with players across the NHL, reignited interest in their dynamic in early December. This was particularly surprising given it had been taboo in local media for a long time.
Well, Bissonnette is back at it with a bombshell that Rangers GM Chris Drury would do absolutely anything to get Miller on his team in New York.
The supposed rift became increasingly difficult to deny when head coach Rick Tocchet started to split Miller and Pettersson on power-play units. Tocchet even dared the media to ask the players directly about the issue.
Both Miller and Pettersson seemed annoyed when questioned about their relationship, even after apparent admissions from Tocchet and team captain Quinn Hughes, that there was some friction.
Now comes one of those critical decisions: Does GM Patrik Allvin move one of his key players, or will they keep all hands on deck in hopes of a Stanley Cup championship?
Depending on what Patrik Allvin chooses to do and whether he wants to trade Miller, due to the no-movement clause, he will have to get his approval, and it is not easy.
While trading Pettersson might be an easier situation to navigate now, his no-movement clause kicks in this summer, so if trading him is a serious consideration, the decision becomes all that much more pressing.
