The verdict is in, and the Department of Player Safety has decided to suspend New York Rangers enforcer Matt Rempe for his vicious hit against the Dallas Stars.

Matt Rempe stated at the beginning of the year that he wanted to put more effort into his game and get rid of the enforcer moniker that has followed him all of his career. However, disagreement quickly returned to the physical realm.

Rempe struck the back of Miro Heiskanen's head with a very risky elbow on Friday night against the Dallas Stars, sending the defenseman tumbling into the boards.

Widespread criticism, an instant ejection, and a five-minute major penalty were the outcomes of the incident.

Fans online were divided, with some defending the hit as clean and others calling it dangerous and careless.

The NHL Department of Player Safety, acknowledging that such a penalty might exceed five games, quickly extended an in-person hearing offer to Rempe.

The league ruled Rempe would be suspended. The outcome wasn't surprising given Rempe's history and player profile.

The incident reflected increased NHL focus on preventing potentially injurious plays, specifically those that take advantage of smaller players.

This could be the making or breaking point in Rempe's career. It is not known if he will still have the support of his New York Rangers teammates and fans, but one thing is for sure: his future in the NHL is more uncertain than ever.
