It was announced today that the Montreal Canadiens have traded former first round pick Jacob Perreault to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Noel Hoefenmayer.

Jacob Perreault was acquired by the Canadiens earlier this year from the Anaheim Ducks in a one for one deal for forward Jan Mysak.

Despite being a former first round pick, Perreault has been unable to hold down a spot in the NHL, or even the AHL consistently.

Upon being sent down to the ECHL this week, it appears he refused assignment, leading to this trade.

This change of scenery to a prospect pool with less depth in Edmonton could be helpful for him.

Hoefenmayer is a former fourth round pick from the Edmonton Oilers.

Here are the details of a trade:

BROSSARD - Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced on Friday that the team has acquired defenseman Noel Hoefenmayer from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Jacob Perreault.

Hoefenmayer, 25, has registered seven points (1G, 6A) in 11 games with the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL this season. The 6-foot-1, 191-pound left-handed defenseman has appeared in 149 regular season games over five AHL seasons with the Toronto Marlies and the Condors, tallying 21 goals and 51 assists.

The Toronto, ON native was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the fourth round (108th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft.

We will see if Hoefenmayer can lock down a spot on the Habs, or at least on the Laval Rocket.

As for Perreault, we will see if he can turn around his career with the Edmonton Oilers.
