The Vegas Golden Knights may have a league-best 40 wins this season, but unfortunately for the league's 31st franchise, it just wasn't enough to secure the President's Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top regular season team.

It's impossible to look at what the Golden Knights have done this season and view it as anything other than a resounding success, but late Thursday, Vegas netminder Robin Lehner took a bit of a shot at himself and the LA Kings for his team not coming out on top this season.

"It was my fault we are not President's Trophy winners but... I'm gonna blame @LAKings for it," said Lehner on Twitter. "Makes me feel a bit better 😂. They have a bright future with Cal Petersen."

Both Cal Petersen and Troy Grosenick had opportunities to take down the Avs and secure the President's Trophy win for the Golden Knights on Wednesday and Thursday in back-to-back losing efforts, with each being blown out in the loss - Petersen by a score of 6-0 and Grosenick by a score of 5-1.

Lehner shouldn't be too hard on himself for his razer-close 2-1 loss to the Avs on Monday night, as he played well enough to win, allowing just two goals in the contest. Perhaps he should be blaming Avs netminder Philipp Grubauer, who stopped 36 of 37 shots on that night, posting a .973 SV%, for the Golden Knights' speudo-failure to win finish as the league's top team.

Though Lehner and a very deep Golden Knights team may have lost the battle in the regular season, they have a reasonably good chance to win the war if these two West Division juggernauts meet in the postseason. I think it's fairly safe to say they would be fine with missing out on a President's Trophy if they can get to the Finals and compete for the Stanley Cup.
