According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Edmonton Oilers defenceman Tyson Barrie is expected to test the free agent market this upcoming offseason.

Dreger mentioned that Barrie is looking for long-term stability rather than the one-year deal he settled with this past offseason, and is hoping to land a deal in the five-to-six-year range. While the Oilers management does want to bring him back, they have other pending unrestricted free agents they also need to re-sign. One of those players is Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, while the other is Adam Larsson, who according to Oilers reporter Jim Matheson is nearing a four-year extension with a cap hit of roughly $3.75 million.

Barrie, 29, signed a one-year deal with the Oilers this season in hopes of a bounce back after a rough go in 2019-20 with the Toronto Maple Leafs. That decision couldn't have worked out any better for him, as he leads all NHL defencemen with 48 points in 55 games, but as a result has likely earned a contract the Oilers will not be able to afford. As of now however, he has bigger things to worry about as him and his teammates will soon take on the Winnipeg Jets in the opening round of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
