Every now and again, hockey can remind us about the importance of just being a good human being wherever and whenever you can. Such is the case for Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano and fellow Flame Milan Lucic who, upon hearing of a 13-year-old Flames fan named Raiden who recently suffered a horrible tragedy when he lost his father unexpectedly, decided to do something very special for the youngster.

Lucic and Giordano were eager to make an impact on the young hockey player, so they decided to surprise him at the rink, ahead of his team's practice to personally send him their condolences and share their stories of facing similar tragedies in their lives, but they didn't stop there.

Following a brief meeting off the ice, Lucic and Giordano joined Raiden and his team on the ice to take part in some drills and show them a few tricks of the trade, making a profound impact on not only Raiden, but his team and coaches as well.

Raiden is the eldest of four children in his family, and despite suffering the tragic loss of his father, his passion for the game saw him return to the ice just a week after the heartbreaking event, with his teammates all donning red stick tape and red stickers on their helmets to pay respects and honour Raiden's father, whose favourite colour was red. Raiden would score a goal late in the game, which prompted a huge huddle at centre ice, where both teams would surround Raiden with their sticks pointing to the sky in honour of the youngster's father.

There is just something so special about the hockey community. Despite the stories you hear that may cause you to want to condemn hockey players, there are stories such as this one that really go a long way in showcasing the absolute class and respect that represent the game much more than the stories that display a negative picture.

It really is a beautiful game we have.
