The Vancouver Canucks are clearly not afraid to make moves as we've seen recently and they have now been linked to a young former first overall pick.

The only trade speculation surrounding Elias Pettersson and the Buffalo Sabres thus far has related to what would come back, beginning with Dylan Cozens and Bowen Byram.

The Canucks could be targeting Owen Power

However, should the Canucks ever trade Pettersson, the first piece from Buffalo they must covet in return is Owen Power, per The Fourth Period.

Power, 22, was the first overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and is in his fourth NHL season. In 213 career games, he has recorded 18 goals and 79 assists.

The 6'6″ defenseman from Mississauga is in the second year of a seven-year contract with an $8.35 million AAV.

«Initially, there was a lot of discussion around the idea of Cozens and Byram,» Harm said. «I wasn't a big fan of that idea, but if you go down that road of trading Pettersson, the guy to get from Buffalo would be Owen Power. I didn't think he would be available, given his stature and being a former number one pick, but seeing Sabres fans talk about Power's situation and how many defencemen they have stocked on the left side of the blue line, even our colleagues who cover the Sabres haven't ruled out the idea of throwing Power into a potential proposal for Pettersson.»

The biggest question in his game, defensive development, has been the focus for Buffalo GM Kevyn Adams.

With his struggles defensively, Power's offensive skills make him a valued asset, especially for Vancouver, who could use another elite puck-moving defenseman.

While Power is an intriguing trade chip, the Canucks wouldn't likely be in on a package that includes both him and Cozens because of cap concerns.

Of course, with all of the rumor mill-churning, Power's one of the names that just won't quit as a potential key return in any Pettersson deal.

Whether Buffalo actually moves their former first-overall pick is anyone's guess, but for the Canucks, he could be a long-term solution on the back end.
