For the fourth time in 2020, the fourth since May to be exact, former first overall NHL draft pick Nail Yakupov is on the move. KHL team Khabarovsk Amur has traded the 27-year-old to Avangard Omsk for monetary compensation.

According to the Russian website Sports.ru, Yakupov has also agreed to a pay cut to play with Avangard in the amount of 45 million rubles, which is equal to roughly $577,000 U.S. dollars.

Yakupov was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2012 entry draft. After six seasons in the NHL and failing to live up to expectations, he signed in the KHL in 2018, where's he's been playing since. Many expected Yakupov to rediscover his game back in his home country. That never really materialized. Last season he had 10 goals and 10 assists in 46 games with SKA St. Petersburg. This season, he had one goal and six assists in 15 games with Amur before the trade.

With the pay cut, Yakupov is now making 25 million rubles this season, or roughly 320,000 USD. There are some rumours in Russian media that he was traded this time because he was unwilling to cut his salary to play for Amur.
