It is with great sadness that we announce that former first-round Washington Capitals draft pick and French League coach Miika Elomo has passed away.

With a little longer in the season to go, French ice hockey team the Cergy-Pontoise Jokers have shared a heartbreaking announcement.

The 9th-standing Ligue Magnus team posted on Sunday, February 9th, they have learned that their head coach, Miika Elomo has unfortunately passed away.

"It is with deep sadness and shock that we have just learned, today, of the death of Miika Elomo, our Head Coach. All our thoughts are with his wife, Maria, his family and loved ones."

Miika Elomo was more than just the head coach of this French hockey team, having a professional playing career before taking a new role behind the bench.

Following playing U18 hockey in his hometown of Turku, Finland, the former 6'0 left wing was the 1995 23rd overall NHL draft pick, getting selected by the Washington Capitals.

Though he only played two games for the NHL during the 1999-2000 season, he made a more prominent impression in North America with the AHL.

Across 216 games with the Saint John Flames and Portland Pirates, Elomo scored 40 goals and recorded 85 total points.

Outside the continent, Elomo became a two-time Finnish League champion with HIFK Helsinki and TPS Turku in back-to-back years.

Following the end of his playing career with the SM-Liiga Espoo Blues, he has become well-known as a coach for U20 and professional clubs, lasting all the way from 2012 until he passed away at just 47 years old.

Though he hardly had a chance to show what he could do in the NHL, Miika Elomo will always be appreciated for his contributions to the sport both on the ice and behind the bench.

We hope you can join us in wishing the best for his friends and family during these difficult times.
