It's somewhat surprising that Zdeno Chara remains a free agent over a week after the market opened. The 43-year-old has played for the Boston Bruins since 2005 and it is widely expected that should be continue to play, it would be for that team. Bruins GM Don Sweeney has given a bit of an update on talks with the defenceman, and said he is waiting for Chara to make his move.

“We have communicated consistently with Zdeno and [his agent] Matt Keator,” said Sweeney. “We're just waiting for him to initiate what he'd like to do moving forward. I feel very comfortable allowing [the decision-making process] to take the necessary time and let Zdeno make his own decisions along that route.”

According to Keator, should Chara decide to play next season, it may not be for the Bruins.

"I asked his agent, Matt Keator, on Thursday for an update and specifically asked, ‘Hey, I'm hearing that it may not necessarily be Boston as a slam dunk if he decides to play another season,'" said TSN Insider Pierre LeBrun earlier this week. "And Keator's answer was ‘looking at all options.' Now, I have to say that the Bruins are probably the frontrunner, but other teams keep calling. The key thing that Keator says is that Zdeno Chara is in no hurry."

LeBrun also noted that Chara is taking into account what next season will look like amid the COVID-19 pandemic before deciding if he wants to play.
