The Arizona Coyotes have loaned forward Barrett Hayton to Tampereen Ilves in Finland's top league, SM-Liiga. Hayton will return to the Coyotes prior to the start of training camps for the 2020-21 NHL season.

"Barrett Hayton is an exceptionally talented, versatile and reliable player who is able to play an excellent two-way game in all game situations for the benefit of his team. This is a great thing for Ilves and the entire League that such a high level of players are currently being seen in Finland," said Ilves' sports director Timo Koskela .

Hayton, 20, was drafted in the first round, 5th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2018 NHL entry draft. During the 2019-20 season, he spent time between the Coyotes and their AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. In 20 regular season games with Arizona, he's put up 4 points (1 G, 3 A), 14 penalty minutes, and was a +2. In 3 playoff games he had no points, no penalty minutes and was a -3. In 5 games with Tucson, Hayton put up 5 points (1 G, 4 A), 4 penalty minutes, and was a +1.

Hayton scored his first career NHL goal on October 25th 2019 against the New Jersey Devils in a 5-3 win. It was the fourth Coyotes goal of the night, and it stood as the game winning goal.

Internationally, Hayton has represented Canada on a few occasions, most recently at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships where he was named captain. Hayton had 12 points (6 G, 6 A), 6 penalty minutes, and was a +1 in 7 games as Canada won the gold medal for the second time in three years. Hayton played through a grade 1 shoulder separation during the tournament, and there was some doubt on whether he would be good to go for the gold medal game against Russia. Not only did he play, he contributed in a big way, scoring Canada's third goal to tie the game in the third period.
