Vegas owner Bill Foley hints at Canadian Division for upcoming season
There was a bit of a surprise Wednesday as Bill Foley, the owner of the Vegas Golden Knights, may have leaked plans for the upcoming NHL season. Foley was appearing on a local radio station when he was asked about the prospect of playing Vancouver and recently traded defenceman Nate Schmidt in 2020-21.
"Yeah, but they're going to be playing in the Canadian division this year," said Foley.
The idea of mini-bubbles for the upcoming season has been rumoured for some time. One of those bubbles may potentially include all seven Canadian teams, as referenced by Foley. This would be a way to work around the closing of the Canadian-U.S. border.
"It is a big deal. I don't think that border's going to be open before January 1st, if it's open January 1st. I really don't," the Golden Knights owner said. "Because Canada's going through — they've got spikes going on and they're starting to lock down again. Winnipeg's locking down. Quebec has got spikes going on. So, you know, I think they're going to play a Canadian division. I don't think they're going to be crossing the border."
January 1st is the date the NHL has been eyeing for the start of the 2020-21 season. However, Foley said he believes it will be around February 1st by the time everything is said and done. At issue for many teams is whether fans will be allowed back in arenas by then and whether it's worth it to stage games if they aren't.
