Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson was a 2023 NHL first-team All-Star and has maintained a nearly 38-goal, 89-point pace spanning 2020-21 to 2023-24.
Off two consecutive trips to the Western Conference Finals, Pete DeBoer's team is convinced that they're one of the elites in the league. This season, though, it's not a matter of accumulating points or getting home ice; they need to close it out.
For that, they need Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, and 21-year-old Wyatt Johnston to produce game-winning plays. So far, their work has been spotty, a painful reminder of their playoff disappointment to the Edmonton Oilers a year ago.
In that series, Hintz and Robertson combined to produce a paltry point over the course of their losses. With a 5-on-5 dominance of more than 70% of scoring chances and almost 80% of expected chances, their game-changing plays never materialized.
That created questions: Is Robertson a potential top forward on a Stanley Cup-winning team? Is Hintz a true No. 1 center? Is Johnston going to be called on to be the game-changer for Dallas to be a serious threat?
As it is, with the trade deadline looming, the Stars don't have a great deal of time to get their questions answered.
Depth is a resource, to be sure, but as Dallas, Carolina, and other contenders learned in the post-season, it won't be enough to get around superstar firepower.
The Stars need their marquee players to produce if they're going to hang with the Connor McDavids of the world.
Robertson's shown he can take over; his 46-goal, 109-point season two campaigns ago landed him a Hart Trophy nomination.
If it's a question of moving on, though, NHL analyst Jeff Marek hears that the Ottawa Senators would be a potential suitor to take a shot at acquiring Robertson.
We will get an answer in less than a month, as the deadline for the Sens to acquire Robertson if they really are that interested is March 7th.
