Yes, you read that title correctly. Starting in the 2020-21 NHL season, the Calgary Flames will be wearing their throwback jerseys as full-time home and away uniforms. Although both jerseys were worn during the 2019-20 season, we should expect to see a formal announcement on October 5th, based on their Twitter bio.

These are the same jerseys the Flames wore from 1980 when they relocated from Atlanta, all the way until 1994. The current variation of the red retro jersey has been worn several times by the Flames in the 2010's, and was made the full time third jersey in 2018-19. The 2018-19 season was the second year of Adidas being the uniform maker for the NHL, and it was the first season of them doing third/alternate jerseys.

The white retro jersey was worn three times this season, but was brought back mainly for the 2019 NHL Heritage Classic, where the Flames took on Winnipeg Jets in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Jets wore a navy blue version of their WHA uniforms from the 1970s.

Calgary isn't the only team bringing back retro uniforms. Last week, the Ottawa Senators revealed their "new" logo, which was just a throwback to their one from the 1990's with some small tweaks to it, and it was announced they will be unveiling new jerseys on draft night (October 6th).

Around draft time is when many jerseys across the NHL are released, and according to Icethetics, we could be seeing plenty more throwback jerseys for the upcoming season. In their annual Jerseywatch post on their website, they outlined that the NHL could be getting ready for a new fourth jersey program, which will see teams across the league add a throwback or retro uniform to their current jersey lineup. The report also mentioned that it could be either throwback jerseys for a team, or an inverted version of their current uniform.

Last season we saw both the St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings resurrect their 1990 retro jerseys for three to four games each, and many are speculating that they were the testers for the new fourth jersey program.

The 2020 NHL entry draft is less than a week away, so we should be expecting a few new jersey reveals. For me personally, I am a huge jersey buff, and draft week is one of my favourite moments of the year.
