Per TSN's Frank Seravalli, the Edmonton Oilers and forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are making progress discussing a long-term contract extension.

Nugent-Hopkins, 27, has been with the Oilers organization since they selected him with the first overall pick at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In 604 career games, he has 169 goals and 443 points. He has also played in 17 postseason games, posting two goals and 12 points. While the career totals aren't what you would expect from a first overall pick, Nugent-Hopkins has been an extremely valuable player for the Oilers due to his tremendous two-way play, something that has caused him to become a fan favorite in Edmonton.

Currently, Nugent-Hopkins has one season remaining on a seven-year deal that pays him $6 million per season. Seeing that his offence has improved in a big way the past few seasons, that number will certainly go up. The Burnaby, British Columbia native set career highs during the 2018-19 season with 28 goals and 69 points in 82 games. This past season his numbers were even more impressive, with 22 goals and 61 points in 65 games. Given the fact that the Oilers have almost no scoring outside of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Nugent-Hopkins, they cannot afford to lose him.
