Oilers appearing more and more likely to re-sign Jesse Puljujarvi

Over the last few months, it has sounded more and more promising that the Edmonton Oilers and Jesse Puljujarvi were closing in on a new deal, which would have him back in the NHL for the 2020-21 season.

Wednesday afternoon, TSN's Frank Seravalli made it sound like a near guarantee, tweeting that the Oilers have made progress in talks to bring Puljujarvi back into the fold. Seravalli's guess is that they agree to terms on a one-year deal worth between $1.2-$1.5 million.

Puljujarvi, 22, spent last season playing for Karpat in the SM-liiga after being unhappy in his role with the Oilers. His decision to go back home seems to have been successful, as he was able to get top line minutes and made the most of it, posting 24 goals and 53 points in 56 games.

While this past season was a success for the big Finnish forward, his professional career to this point has been anything but. The 2016 fourth overall selection has not yet been able to adapt to the North American game, bouncing up and down between the NHL and AHL. To this point, he has played in 139 career NHL games, posting 17 goals and 37 points. Assuming the two sides are able to agree on a deal, it will be interesting to see how he fairs in the NHL this time around. He certainly has the skill.
