Per Elliotte Friedman, during Wednesday's edition of "31 Thoughts", the Carolina Hurricanes are rumoured to be interested in locking up budding superstar Andrei Svecknikov to an 8-year extension worth as much as $7.5M per season.

Though Friedman has not yet confirmed these details with either the team, nor Svechnikov's agent, Mark Gandler, Friedge's sources tend to hold up pretty well, indicating that the two sides are at least talking about getting something done in advance of the expiration of Svechnikov's ELC, at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season.

Friedman also mentioned that Svechnikov may wish to pursue a bridge deal and bet on himself to possibly increase his value on his next deal.

Svechnikov is set to enter the third and final year of his entry-level contract, earning just $925k. Though a jump to $7.5M may seem a bit steep for a player who registered just 37 points in 82 games in 2018-19, his rapid development and strong performance in his sophomore season (61 points in 68 games) is evidence of his worth. The 20-year-old winger also notched 12 points in 15 career postseason games.

Svechnikov was drafted 2nd overall by the Hurricanes in 2018.
