The San Diego Padres are facing the Cardinals today. St. Louis is an experienced team, and the Padres need their best players out on the field. Unfortunately for them this will not happen, as their top two starting pitchers, Dinelson Lamet and Mike Clevinger, are not on their Wild Card Roster. In a three-game series with no rest days, pitching is as important as ever. They still have stud Chris Paddack, but missing Clevinger and Lamet will hurt any team. They are arguably the top two pitchers on the team, with Paddack being the only other person who could make a case against them.

Clevinger pitched in eight games, going 3-2 with a 3.02 ERA. He also struck out 40 in 41.2 innings pitched. He was the talk of the trade deadline when San Diego made a blockbuster move to acquire him from the Indians. Then there is Dinelson Lamet, a breakout player who has dominated this season. In 12 games, he went 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 69 innings. These are two players that the Padres will surely miss, and if they lose this series, it can certainly be something to point out.
