Yzerman announces two Red Wings defencemen won't be back

Since coming to the Detroit Red Wings from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Steve Yzerman has made it clear that he has no issues making tough decisions as general manager in order to help the team. In staying true to that, Yzerman has announced that the team will not be bringing back two of its defenceman who are set to become free agents, one of which who has been with the franchise his entire career.

Jonathan Ericsson, 36, has been a member of the Wings since being drafted by Detroit in the 9th round in 2002. He's played 680 games with the franchise and was named the team's Rookie of the Year by Detroit Sports Media in 2009. He collected 27 goals and 125 points over that span. Ericsson is coming off a six-year contract that was paying him $4.25 million per season (AAV).

Yzerman has also announced that the team will let blueliner Trevor Daley, 36, walk to free agency. He's been with Detroit since signing there as a free agent in 2017. His expiring contract paid him $3.17 million per season.

Yzerman had already made a splash this weekend, picking up defenceman Marc Staal from the New York Rangers in exchange for a second-round pick and future considerations. The move was essentially a cap dump for the Rangers, but allowed Detroit, a team in the middle of a rebuild, to pick up another draft pick.
