The Detroit Red Wings acquire Marc Staal from the Rangers

The New York Rangers created some much needed cap space on Saturday, trading veteran blueliner Marc Staal to the Detroit Red Wings for future considerations. The Wings also receive a 2021 second round draft pick in the deal. With the move, the Rangers free up $5.7M in cap space.

There has been some speculation as to whether Staal actually waived his no-movement clause to play with the Wings, with some suggesting that the deal may involve a buy-out of the final year of the 33-year-old's contract, which would free up the Thunder Bay native to sign with a team of his choosing.

Speculation aside, Wings GM Steve Yzerman also announced on Saturday during a media call that both Jonathan Ericsson and Trevor Daley will not be returning for next season and will both be heading to free agency on October 9th. This could suggest that the intent is to have Staal play for the Wings next season.

Staal has spent his entire 13-year NHL career with the Rangers after being drafted 12th overall in 2005, amassing 188 points through 892 NHL games.
