It seems NHL commissioner Gary Bettman may be getting the last laugh on this one. You know those animated board ads the league has been using this season that have been mocked and criticized relentlessly by fans? The technology used to create them is up for a very prestigious award.

It was announced Thursday that the ads, as featured in broadcasts on ESPN and TNT, have been nominated for the George Wensel Technical Achievement Award in the sports category at the Emmys.

Any hope that these ads might be given the boot have certainly been dashed by the latest development. Despite complaints from fans, Bettman and the league have been adamant that the ads are working, a sure sign that they're increasing revenue for the NHL.

Fans have called the animated ads distracting and downright annoying for those trying to watch a hockey game at home. There have also been some issues this season with glitches causing players to sometimes disappear completely while the ads change.
